IELTS Essay: Causes and Solutions Example

Question

Water pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues in many parts of the world.

Why is water pollution a growing concern for both individuals and governments?
What measures can be taken to reduce the problem effectively?

Model Answer

Water pollution is an increasingly serious environmental problem in many countries. It poses a growing threat to both individuals and governments because of its impact on public health, ecosystems and economies. However, a combination of stricter regulations and responsible behaviour can significantly reduce this problem.

One major reason water pollution is a growing concern is its direct effect on human health. Contaminated rivers, lakes and groundwater can contain harmful chemicals, bacteria and heavy metals, which may cause diseases and other long-term health problems. This places a considerable burden on individuals through medical expenses and reduced quality of life. Governments are also concerned because treating polluted water and dealing with related health crises can require substantial public expenditure. Furthermore, pollution damages aquatic ecosystems, reducing fish populations and threatening industries such as fishing and tourism.

Several measures can be adopted to tackle this issue effectively. First, governments should impose stricter regulations on factories and agricultural businesses, requiring them to treat industrial waste and reduce the use of harmful chemicals before these substances enter waterways. Heavy fines should be imposed on companies that violate environmental standards. In addition, governments can invest in modern sewage-treatment facilities and reliable waste-management systems. Individuals also have an important role to play by reducing plastic consumption, disposing of household waste properly and avoiding the unnecessary use of chemical products.

In conclusion, water pollution is increasingly concerning because it threatens human health, natural ecosystems and economic stability. Although governments must take the lead through stronger laws and infrastructure investment, individuals should also adopt more environmentally responsible habits. Only through these combined efforts can the quality of the world’s water resources be protected for future generations.

Breakdown

1. Task Response

  • Addresses both questions fully: The essay clearly explains:
    • why water pollution concerns individuals and governments;
    • what governments and individuals can do to reduce it.
  • The causes are relevant and logically developed, particularly:
    • health problems;
    • financial/public expenditure;
    • damage to ecosystems;
    • effects on fishing and tourism.
  • The solutions are practical and clearly explained:
    • stricter regulations;
    • industrial waste treatment;
    • fines;
    • sewage-treatment facilities;
    • responsible individual behaviour.
  • The conclusion effectively summarises the main position without introducing a new idea.

2. Coherence & Cohesion

  • Excellent four-paragraph organisation:
    1. Introduction
    2. Reasons for concern
    3. Solutions
    4. Conclusion
  • Ideas progress naturally from the problem to its consequences and then to solutions.
  • Cohesive devices are used appropriately:
    • “Furthermore”
    • “First”
    • “In addition”
    • “Although”
    • “Only through these combined efforts”
  • Referencing is generally clear, with no significant problems involving pronouns or repetition.
  • Paragraphing is particularly effective because each paragraph has a clear purpose.
  • To reach Band 9, the progression could be even more nuanced, with stronger logical connections between individual points rather than relying mainly on standard linking expressions.

3. Lexical Resource

Strong vocabulary throughout:

  • “pressing environmental issues”
  • “growing threat”
  • “contaminated rivers, lakes and groundwater”
  • “heavy metals”
  • “considerable burden”
  • “public expenditure”
  • “aquatic ecosystems”
  • “stricter regulations”
  • “environmental standards”
  • “sewage-treatment facilities”
  • “waste-management systems”
  • “economic stability”

The vocabulary is:

  • precise;
  • appropriate to the topic;
  • natural rather than unnecessarily complicated;
  • largely free from spelling or word-choice errors.

One minor issue is that “increasingly serious,” “growing concern,” and “increasingly concerning” repeat a similar idea. Some variation could make the writing more sophisticated.

4. Grammatical Range & Accuracy

  • The essay demonstrates a good range of structures:
    • complex sentences;
    • subordinate clauses;
    • participial structures;
    • modal constructions;
    • relative clauses.
  • Examples:
    • “…because of its impact on public health, ecosystems and economies.”
    • “Contaminated rivers, lakes and groundwater can contain harmful chemicals…”
    • “Although governments must take the lead…”
  • Grammar is consistently accurate.
  • There are no significant grammatical errors that interfere with communication.
  • Sentence structures are varied without becoming unnatural.
