IELTS Reading is another major section of the IELTS test, and unlike Listening, you have to manage the passages and questions entirely on your own.
Duration: 60 minutes
Number of questions: 40
Marks: 1 mark per correct answer
Number of passages: 3
Total reading time: 60 minutes — there is normally no extra transfer time at the end.
There are two versions:
- Academic Reading — mainly for university admission and professional purposes.
- General Training Reading — mainly for migration, work and everyday purposes.
📚 Academic Reading: 3 Passages
| Passage | Typical content | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Passage 1 | General academic/scientific topic | ⭐⭐ |
| Passage 2 | More detailed academic topic | ⭐⭐⭐ |
| Passage 3 | Complex argument/research topic | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
The passages become progressively more difficult, although this is not guaranteed in every test.
📝 Common Question Types
You should be familiar with:
⚠️ The Biggest Reading Traps
1. True / False / Not Given
This is one of the most misunderstood question types.
- TRUE → the passage agrees with the statement.
- FALSE → the passage contradicts it.
- NOT GIVEN → the passage does not provide enough information.
Don’t use your personal knowledge. Only use information from the passage.
2. Matching Headings
Don’t choose a heading simply because one word appears repeatedly.
Look for the main idea of the paragraph.
3. Synonyms
IELTS rarely repeats exactly the same wording.
For example:
Question: The company experienced a rapid increase in sales.
The passage might say:
Sales rose dramatically.
You need to recognise:
rapid increase = rose dramatically
4. Time Management
A useful strategy for Academic Reading is approximately:
- Passage 1: 15–17 minutes
- Passage 2: 18–20 minutes
- Passage 3: 23–25 minutes
Don’t spend 5 minutes trying to solve one question.
🔍 The Best Reading Technique
Use:
Skim → Scan → Locate → Read Carefully → Answer
Skimming: Quickly understand the general topic and structure.
Scanning: Search for specific names, dates, numbers, keywords or concepts.
Locate: Find the relevant paragraph.
Read carefully: Read the surrounding sentences rather than relying on one keyword.
Answer: Choose the answer based strictly on the text.
🎯 Approximate Academic Reading Scores
| Correct answers | Approx. Band |
|---|---|
| 39–40 | 9.0 |
| 37–38 | 8.5 |
| 35–36 | 8.0 |
| 33–34 | 7.5 |
| 30–32 | 7.0 |
| 27–29 | 6.5 |
| 23–26 | 6.0 |
| 19–22 | 5.5 |
| 15–18 | 5.0 |
Exact conversion can vary slightly between test versions.
🚀 For Band 8+
If you’re targeting Band 8 or higher, don’t try to understand every word in the passage. Instead, develop these skills:
- Fast skimming
- Efficient scanning
- Recognising paraphrases
- Understanding paragraph structure
- Handling True/False/Not Given
- Matching headings quickly
- Managing difficult vocabulary from context
- Avoiding answers based on personal knowledge
- Keeping strict time
- Checking spelling and word limits
⭐ One Important Rule
IELTS Reading is not primarily a test of how fast you can read English. It is a test of how efficiently you can find and interpret the information you need.
For a Band 8, aim for roughly 35–36+ correct answers out of 40, while also becoming very consistent with the difficult question types.
